After-School Activities in Forney, TX: What's Actually Available

The stretch between the last bell and dinner is the hardest logistics problem in a school-year household. Here’s the honest inventory of what Forney offers, and what each option costs you in time.

Sports

Forney Recreational Sports (FRS) — the city program. Baseball, softball, and soccer for ages 3–15, run through Forney Parks & Recreation. Rec-level, affordable, close to home. Registration windows close early, so calendar them.

Forney Youth Athletic Association (FYAA) — the Spartans. Tackle football, flag football, cheerleading, dance, basketball, and baseball. Covers the sports the city doesn’t, and draws from Talty, Heartland, and Crandall as well as Forney. fyaaspartans.com.

Forney / Crandall NFL Flag — joint league with Crandall, includes jersey, shorts, regular season, playoff tournament, and UIL-certified officials. The right answer for a kid who wants football without the tackle commitment.

Forney Soccer Club — the select track at forneysoccer.org. More travel, longer season, tryouts.

Martial Arts

Forney Family Self Defense runs traditional martial arts for kids and adults, Krav Maga, and self-defense, plus a dedicated after-school program with pickup. Martial arts is the sleeper option for the 3:30–6 gap because a lot of studios will get your kid from school, which converts a driving problem into a non-problem.

After-School Care

Several licensed after-school programs operate in Forney, some with school pickup. If pickup is included, price it against what your time is worth — thirty minutes of driving a day, five days a week, is roughly 100 hours a year.

For full-day and younger-kid options, we did a separate rundown of private preschool and daycare in Forney.

Free and Low-Cost

Forney Community Park holds 84% of the city’s parkland and has playgrounds, soccer and baseball/softball fields, tennis courts, hiking trails, a splash pad (through Labor Day), and the Spillman Amphitheater. It is the default after-school destination in this town for a reason.

The Forney ISD Aquatic Center at 431 Inspiration Way runs Learn2Swim, Swim Academy, middle school swim, and water polo camps. Open swim is $5 general, $4 for FISD students with ID. Note that kids 3 and under can’t be in the water during open swim — details in our Aquatic Center guide.

The public library and church programs — Forney has a large slate of Wednesday-night church youth programming, which for many families is the actual answer to midweek. We mapped churches near the gym previously.

The Part Nobody Budgets For

Two kids in two activities generally means:

  • Four weeknight trips, most landing between 4:30 and 7:30
  • One or two Saturday commitments
  • Somewhere between 3 and 6 hours of driving a week

Which is why parents in Forney stop working out in September. It isn’t willpower. Their evenings genuinely no longer exist.

Two Ways to Get Your Own Hour Back

Train during the activity, not after it. This is the single highest-leverage change. If your kid has a 90-minute practice or class anywhere near US-80, you’re already out of the house. We’re at 127 E US Highway 80 — right in the middle of the corridor most of these drives use. A lot of our 5:30 and 6 p.m. regulars are parents who used to sit in the parking lot.

Or move it to the morning entirely. We open at 5 a.m. Monday through Friday, and the block right after drop-off is the most reliably empty hour in a school-year parent’s day. More on picking a window in our back-to-school routine piece.

For the Kid Who Comes With You

The Kids Zone runs weekday afternoons 4–8 p.m. (and mornings 8 a.m.–1 p.m.), ages 1–11, up to two hours per child per day. That 4–8 block exists specifically because of the after-school gap.

The Kids Zone is a supervised play area for parents exercising at TX Fitness — not a licensed child-care facility, and not regulated by the State of Texas. A parent has to be exercising on-site and stay in the club.

What It Costs

$19 every two weeks for an adult. Family plans: $31 for an adult plus a kid, $43 for an adult plus two or more, $62 for two adults and two or more kids — no annual fee on any family plan, and two kids costs the same as five.

Middle and high schoolers on a family plan get the full floor, which matters if they’re in a fall sport.
