After-School in Crandall and Heartland: Working With What You've Got

Crandall TXheartlandfamilieskids

Crandall ISD covers a genuinely odd footprint: the city of Crandall, plus Heartland — a master-planned community of thousands of homes with a Forney mailing address and Crandall schools. The after-school situation is different in each.

Heartland Has More On-Site Than People Realize

If you live in Heartland, a lot of the after-school problem is solvable without leaving the neighborhood. The community runs over 400 acres of parks and picnic areas, a 35-acre stocked lake with a fishing pier, miles of hike and bike trails, and two separate amenity compounds:

Heartland Park — three pools (junior-Olympic, volleyball, and tot), a basketball court, baseball and soccer fields, and the Pirate’s Cove playground.

The Oasis — two 30-foot waterslides, three pools, a splash pad, playground, outdoor game room, snack bar, a 5,000 sq ft event center, and a 6,000 sq ft fitness center.

That’s a real amenity package, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. If your workout is 30 minutes of cardio and some dumbbells, the Oasis fitness center is right there and it’s included in what you already pay.

Where it runs out is on the strength side — a 6,000 sq ft amenity gym has a limited free-weight footprint, no infrared sauna, and no supervised kids room. If you’re squatting and pressing seriously, or you need somewhere for a 3-year-old to be while you train, that’s a different facility. More on that trade-off in our Heartland gym comparison.

Crandall Proper

Crandall ISD bell times, 2026-27:

  • Elementary — 7:55 a.m. – 3:40 p.m.
  • Middle — 7:20 a.m. – 3:05 p.m.
  • High — 8:25 a.m. – 4:10 p.m.

Note the middle school 3:05 release. That’s the earliest bell in the area, and it makes the after-school gap in Crandall longer than most.

Sports. The Forney / Crandall NFL Flag league is jointly run and covers both towns — jersey, shorts, regular season, playoff tournament, UIL-certified officials. FYAA in Forney also draws heavily from Crandall and Heartland for tackle football, basketball, cheer, and dance. And Crandall High athletics moved into District 7-5A in the 2026 realignment, facing Dallas Bryan Adams, Sunset, W.T. White, Mesquite, North Mesquite, West Mesquite, and Tyler High.

Church programming. Wednesday nights are a real fixture in Crandall, same as Forney.

The Distance Problem

Here’s the thing about Crandall and Heartland: most of the paid activity options are in Forney. Martial arts studios, dance, gymnastics, tutoring centers, the Aquatic Center. Which means the after-school routine for a lot of Crandall ISD families already involves a drive up 148 or across to US-80.

Once you accept that, the question changes. It stops being “how do I avoid the drive” and becomes “what else can I stack onto a trip I’m already making.”

Stacking It

We’re at 127 E US Highway 80 in Forney — about 12–15 minutes from most of Heartland, and roughly 15 from Crandall proper.

If your kid has a 5:30 class in Forney, you have a 90-minute block in Forney. That’s not dead time unless you let it be. We’re open until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, so the evening window is genuinely wide.

The Kids Zone covers weekday afternoons 4–8 p.m. and mornings 8 a.m.–1 p.m., ages 1–11, two hours per child per day — which handles the younger sibling who otherwise sits in a lobby.

The Kids Zone is a supervised play area for parents exercising at TX Fitness — not a licensed child-care facility, and not regulated by the State of Texas.

The Spring Break Thing

One Crandall-specific date to bank now: Crandall ISD’s spring break is March 15–19, 2027. Forney ISD’s is March 8–12. They don’t overlap.

If you’re a Heartland family with Forney friends, coworkers, or in-laws, that’s two consecutive weeks of somebody’s kids being out. Full calendar comparison here.

Fall break and Thanksgiving, at least, line up: Oct 12–16 and Nov 23–27 for both districts.

What We Charge

$19 every two weeks for an adult, $12 per kid on a family plan. One adult plus one kid is $31; one adult plus two or more is $43; two adults plus two or more is $62. No annual fee on family plans, no contract, cancel with 30 days’ notice.

If you’re weighing it against amenity-center access you already pay for, the 7-day free trial is the cheap way to find out. No card required. Or read up on the drive and what’s here on our Heartland and Crandall pages.
