Junior Golf Near Forney: How to Get a Kid Playing for $5 a Round
Golf has a reputation as the expensive kid sport. It’s earned — but there’s a program running in DFW right now that undercuts it badly, and most parents in Kaufman County have never heard of it.
Youth on Course: $5 Rounds
The Texas Golf Association Foundation runs Youth on Course, which gets juniors ages 6–18 onto participating courses for $5 or less per round.
It launched in San Antonio in 2020 and expanded to DFW and Austin in 2021, which puts the Forney and Rockwall area squarely in the coverage map.
Five dollars a round changes the entire math of the sport. The usual barrier to a kid getting good at golf isn’t lessons — it’s that a round costs enough that they play six times a year instead of sixty. Remove that and golf becomes about as expensive as youth soccer.
Check the current participating course list on the TGA site before assuming your nearest course is in.
The Courses
Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club — a 7,281-yard par 72 with lake views and a genuinely public-friendly tee sheet. Clubhouse renovations were slated to finish in summer 2026.
Buffalo Creek Golf Club — par 71, and it pulls players from across the Metroplex, which tells you what kind of course it is.
Rockwall itself has three courses — one public, two private — and there are roughly 28 more within 20 miles. For a kid learning, proximity beats prestige. The course they’ll actually play twice a week is better than the one you drive 45 minutes to.
Indoor and Year-Round
The Wedge in Forney runs TrackMan iO simulator bays, serving the east Dallas metro. Worth knowing for two reasons:
- Winter. North Texas golf from December through February is a coin flip. Simulators aren’t.
- Feedback. TrackMan gives launch, spin, and club path numbers. A kid gets more useful correction from twenty minutes of that than from a season of guessing on a range mat.
Competitive Tracks
If your kid gets serious, the Texas Junior Golf Tour runs 85 competitive junior tournaments, with a large share of them in the Dallas area. That’s the on-ramp to junior rankings and eventually college recruiting.
Both Forney ISD high schools and both Rockwall ISD high schools field golf teams. Talk to the athletic department before spending money on private coaching — school programs vary a lot in how much instruction they actually provide.
The Physical Side Parents Skip
Golf looks like a low-athleticism sport. At the junior competitive level it very much isn’t, and this is where a lot of promising kids stall out.
Distance off the tee is a rotational power problem, and rotational power comes from the hips and the trunk, not the arms. The junior who adds 25 yards between fourteen and sixteen almost always did it in a weight room, not on a range.
The useful work is unglamorous:
- Hinge patterns — deadlift variations, RDLs
- Anti-rotation core — Pallof presses, chops, carries
- Single-leg stability — split squats, step-ups
- Thoracic and hip mobility — the actual limiter for most teenagers
None of that requires anything exotic. It requires a barbell, some cables, and consistency.
And the Adult Version
If you play, the same thing applies with more urgency. Golf is one of the few sports people play into their seventies, and whether you’re still playing at seventy is largely decided by hip mobility and trunk strength in your forties and fifties.
Also worth knowing: 18 holes walking is real cardio, and 18 holes in a cart is not. If the cart is the plan, the fitness has to come from somewhere else.
Where We Fit
We’re at 127 E US Highway 80 in Forney — five minutes from most of Forney, about 20–25 from Heath and 25 from Rockwall. Over 10,000 sq ft, full free-weight floor, cable machines for rotational work, and infrared saunas, which after 18 in the heat is not nothing.
Open 5 a.m.–11 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 5 a.m.–10 p.m. Friday, 6 a.m.–9 p.m. weekends — so an early round and a late lift both work.
High school golfers are covered on a family plan: $31 every two weeks for an adult plus a kid, $43 for an adult plus two or more, no annual fee. Adult solo is $19 every two weeks.
Our free HIIT class — Saturdays 9 a.m., Studio X, 50 minutes, open to non-members — is a decent conditioning base if you’d rather not program it yourself. And there’s a 7-day free trial, no card required.
